Apple App Store Hits 10 Million Downloads on First Weekend

This simply has to make it on the news as well.  One of the biggest selling points of the new iPhone 3G is its mobile internet.  As a platform for games and other applications, Apple has launched a new marketplace in conjunction with its current music store, iTunes.  Still inside the iTunes framework, the App Store is where developers and Apple are selling their different Applications.  At the time of launch last week a day before the launch of the iPhone 3G, there were about 500 applications available and about 25% of which were free.

However, on launch date July 11, the overwhelming number of iPhone buyers clogged up the system.  Many iPhone 3G's left stores unactivated, and many original iPhones and iPod Touches did not receive their needed firmware update and ended up bricked.   Despite these problems, which were apparently remedied before the weekend's end, the App Store has served its 10 millionth download in record breaking time.

From the Apple announcement , “The App Store is a grand slam, with a staggering 10 million applications downloaded in just three days,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Developers have created some extraordinary applications, and the App Store can wirelessly deliver them to every iPhone and iPod touch user instantly.”

Although, come to think of it, 10 million downloads is weak, considering the number of iPhone and iPod Touch users both new and old.  If they sold 1 million iPhone 3G's + a gazillion iPhones and iPod Touches, it comes down to about less than one application downloaded per user.  Anyway, it's still an amazing feat.
