Apple is expected to launch an online directory of applications built for the iPhone.  An Apple employee told AppleInsider blog that "Apple representatives have been tracking down authors of Web-based iPhone apps and asking them to submit official screenshots, icons, web addresses and descriptions of their applications to the company."

The submision however has been kept away from teh media's eye with Apple having to let the designers "swear" secrecy of the process.  The process is actually similar to their current drill for widgets on their Mac platforms. 

More according to the AppleInsider, Apple " is sticking to its guns regarding third party application development for its touch-screen handset -- mainly that it discourages native application development in favor of Web-based applications that do not pose a threat to the stability of the iPhone operating system in general."

What apple will probably do with this directory is create a shortcut native on the handset to take users to the diretory of web applications  with a single tap of the screen.

Reports indicate that Apple could be launching the directory today but we haven't gotten any news yet.
