Guitar hero nintendo DS

Nintendo DS has since become known for delivering quirky games that are enjoyable for the casual video gamer, and its version of the cult console hit Guitar Hero is no exception. Popular gaming site Video Games Zone has provided a first look on the much-anticipated "Guitar Hero on Tour", dropping jaws and widening eyes in the process-mainly because on how you would play it.

Guitar Hero on Tour included an aptly-named Guitar Grip, a peripheral consisting of four buttons (instead of the usual five) that is easily fitted in the GBA slot. Users hold the DS upright (much like how you play "Hotel Dusk") with your left hand and tap the buttons using your finger. The right hand, meanwhile, is used to plucking the strings located on the touchscreen using a pick that is also included in the game package.

Playing the game is much like the console version: you perform perfect note-strings, gain multipliers, gain and use star power, and feel "cool" in the process.  The screens also show a working tremolo, but how it works is still a mystery. Now, if only we don't have to wait for Summer 2008. ...more

Apple has just released the latest version of their internet browser today, Safari 3.1.  The browser runs cross platform and boasts improvements from the previous version.

According to CNET:

"The Web browser now supports a number of new Web standards: HTML 5's latest audio and video tags, as well as CSS Animations. Apple claims that page load times in Safari 3.1 are 1.9 times faster than Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7 and 1.7 times faster than Mozilla's Firefox 2, and that JavaScript runs as much as six times faster in the new Safari than in other browsers."

vc funding

I'm sure I'm  not the only one thinking that VC funding is slowing down in Silicon Valley.  However, slowdown doesn't mean stop and so far, today shows a good sign with a roundup that does put a smile on our faces.

Today I noticied an ad on my Gmail. it basically said that I can now chat with my AIM buddies on Gmail.

Integrated Gtalk on Gmail is one of the things that made me shift to Gmail.Let's face it, it's just too convenient to have IM capabilities along with your mail. Google of course used their own IM first but now with AIM already in, let's hope that ICQ and Jabber follow. And since we're being really hopeful, Y!M in Gmail would be great too.

GLoomy Sky by Mike Porter

Let's  just assume that time factors are at play. The first quarter is closing, Mondays generally suck and the US economy is slumped.  Still good news hangs and startups are still working their butts off for that ill-needed funding.

Here's today's roundup.

Yesterday, AOL purchased the social network Bebo with plans to marry it with AIM.  Today, it seems that social nwtork + IM is becoming the trend.  Facebook is working on an instant messaging service that they will be integrating on their site (of course).

Basically, the IM service built into Facebook will allow users to chat with their friends without leaving Facebook or opening another application.  This is not entirely new, Social IM already tried this as a cross platform service but has failed to penetrate the market probably because you still had to go to the Social IM website and configure your social network to work with it (not too hard to do but still an extra step).  MySpace also has a similar service MySpace IM.

The Facebook IM offers quite the same service as MySpace but given that more people do use Facebook, it might be possible that this IM service might make a bigger dent. ...more

trend micro

PC-Cillin creator Trend Micro has proven itself to be one of the best software security and antivirus makers on the market.  Trend Micro's signature strategy of employing thousands of outsourced watchdogs in Asia and around the world to deliberately search and detect viruses has been a formiddable opponent to virus makers and hackers.

However, in an embarrasing episode, Trend Micro's own website was hacked this week.   According to the vendor:

"A similar previous attack seems to have started more than a week ago, and nearly 200,000 Web pages have been found to be compromised, most of which are running phpBB. This contrasts (Wednesday's) attack in that the vast majority of those were active server pages (.ASP). The ASP attacks are different than the phpBB ones in that the payload and method are quite different. Various exploits are used in the ASP attacks, where the phpBB ones rely on social engineering. phpBB mass hacks have occurred in the past, including those done by the Perl/Santy.worm back in 2004." ...more

AOL Buys Bebo

AOL buys Bebo

Content is power (and money) in Web2.0.  That's the definitive point that determines this web generation from the last.

Social Networks are worth serious money, in July 2005, News Corp. purchased the parent of MySpace for $580 million. At the time, MySpace had about 21 million users, costing $27.62 per user.  Facebook is valued at $15 billion with 50 million users which comes to about $300 per user.  Today, AOL bought Bebo for $850 million with 40 million users.

$21.25 per user is the magic number AOL paid for today to acquire Bebo, a fast growing social network ranked number 3 in the US.  Randy Falco, chairman and CEO of AOL, said,  “Bebo is the perfect complement to AOLs personal communications network and puts us in a leading position in social media." ...more

Oh yeah!  Remember how howI was ranting about lacking stuff to report for this segment?  Well, today I got swamped and elated with the number of items I'm about to share.

I was beginning to think that the US economy was going to kill off the VC's and the start ups.  Good thing I was wrong.
