It's confirmed. Google will be bidding for the C-Block 700MHz wireless spectrum auction this January. Google honcho Eric Schmidt says,
"We believe it's important to put our money where our principles are. Consumers deserve more competition and innovation than they have in today's wireless world. No matter which bidder ultimately prevails, the real winners of this auction are American consumers who likely will see more choices than ever before in how they access the Internet."
After much speculation the word is finally out officially. It has been a long time coming and indicative from Google to take part in the FCC's auction. Now Google's mobile efforts will face one of their largest hurdles and preparations for this have long been undertaken. If Google wins the auction, which many also speculate they will, Google will be creating a new market for mobile data services no longer dictated by telecommunication giants such as AT&T. Also, with Google's new Android mobile platform that they are widely distributing, their plans of making the mobile world something like the internet is well on its way.
The minimum bid is $4.6 Billion and Google has been readying their funds for the bid. Verizon and AT&T are also in the game so we might be seeing some sparks fly. However, a surprising anouncement from Time Warner says that they will not be participating in the auction for the prized spectrum along with their subsidiaries, Comcast, Charter, Cox and Brighthouse Networks.
